Cowboy Creed

Every time I start a Sales Trainee class, the first thing I do is have everyone think about their belief system. The core things that drive their actions. Things like honesty, work ethic, tenacity and so on. Your success starts with your beliefs, your code. You can't build a base for your value prop or the rules in which you conduct business without your beliefs.

Years ago, I was hunting with a coworker in Idaho. We stayed in a friend’s beautiful home. Early one morning before anyone else was up I grabbed a cup of coffee and walked around the house taking in the beautiful art and incredible architectural features of the home. As I poked around, I came across a little frame that caught my eye. It was not a picture; it was a handwritten note. It was titled "The Cowboy Creed", and when I read it, I chuckled. The irony of being in the middle of nowhere, where cowboys really are cowboys and this creed is exactly like my belief system. My Sales Creed.

 The Cowboy Creed

Honesty, integrity, courage.

Live each day to its fullest.

Take pride in your work.

Do what has to be done.

Be tough, but fair.

When you make a promise, keep it.

Sell the brand.

Talk less, say more.

Remember, somethings aren't for sale.

Know where to draw the line.

If you have not thought about your belief system, now is the time to start. Beliefs drive behaviors or actions, actions drive results, and results drive success.
